Bone Grafting in Banff
Rebuilding the foundation for a strong, healthy smile
WhatIsDentalBoneGrafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that restores bone in areas of the jaw where it has been lost. When a tooth is removed or lost, the surrounding bone can deteriorate over time. Without adequate bone, dental implants cannot be placed securely, and the shape of your face may begin to change.
At Rocky Mountain Dental, we use bone grafting to rebuild the jawbone, creating a solid foundation for implants and preserving your facial structure. The procedure involves placing bone graft material at the site of bone loss, which encourages your body to regenerate new, healthy bone over time.
Our implant care is led by Dr. Tanya Khattra, who brings 11 years of experience and ongoing training in modern implant techniques. She continues to learn and refine her approach so our patients benefit from up-to-date, evidence-based bone grafting and implant care.
WhenIsBoneGraftingNeeded?
Bone loss in the jaw can occur for a number of reasons. Bone grafting may be recommended in the following situations.
Before Dental Implants
Dental implants require sufficient bone to anchor securely. If bone has been lost at the implant site, a graft rebuilds the area so the implant can integrate properly.
After Tooth Extraction
Socket preservation grafting is performed immediately after a tooth is removed. It fills the empty socket with graft material to prevent the bone from collapsing and shrinking.
Gum Disease and Bone Loss
Advanced periodontal disease can destroy the bone supporting your teeth. Bone grafting can help regenerate lost bone and stabilize teeth that have become loose.
Ridge Augmentation
When the jawbone ridge has become too thin or short due to long-term tooth loss, ridge augmentation rebuilds the bone to the proper height and width for implant placement.
Trauma or Injury
Facial injuries or accidents that damage the jawbone may require bone grafting to repair the affected area and restore proper jaw structure.
Long-Term Tooth Loss
The longer a tooth has been missing, the more bone resorption occurs. Bone grafting reverses this loss and prepares the jaw for restoration.
Consultation and Assessment
We begin with a thorough examination including digital X-rays or a CT scan to evaluate the extent of bone loss and determine the best grafting approach for your situation.
Preparing the Site
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone beneath, and the site is carefully prepared to receive the graft material.
Placing the Graft Material
Bone graft material is placed at the site. This may include synthetic bone, donor bone, or your own bone harvested from another area. A membrane may be placed over the graft to protect it during healing.
Healing and Integration
Over the following months, your body gradually replaces the graft material with new, natural bone. We schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing and determine when the site is ready for the next step.
