CEREC: high tech dentistry
CEREC: the convenience of modern dentistry
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. A revolutionary CAD/CAM system (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) developed by the dental company Sirona, CEREC allows ceramic filings, crowns and veneers to be fabricated in a single visit. Using a computer and machine that work in tandem, custom ceramic restorations are milled to precision.
Highly accurate digital images of teeth, taken by the computer, are used within the computer’s software to create ceramic restorations in a virtual environment. Instructions on how to make the restorations are then sent to the machine, which follows them and cuts the ceramic to specifications. CEREC allows the dentist to fully re-engineer a tooth. There are many parameters that can be modified to define the correct contours, color and size.
Prior to CAD/CAM dentistry, only dental technicians made ceramics, crowns and veneers. Now, digital impressions make the experience much easier for patients. Teeth only need to be worked on once, which prevents the need for any temporary restorations or a second administration of dental anesthetic.
